Women’s Tennis Dethrones Goldey-Beacom In CACC Championship Semifinals With 4-3 Triumph


MIDDLEBURY, Conn. – In a contest that featured the last nine Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Tennis champions, the No. 33 Concordia College (N.Y.) Clippers overcame a 3-0 deficit on Saturday afternoon to defeat the back-to-back league champions Goldey-Beacom College 4-3 in the CACC Championship Semifinals.

• Concordia improves to 11-2 overall.

• Goldey-Beacom falls to 8-2 with both losses coming against Concordia.
• At the top doubles flight, Lotte Lesscher y Post and Catarina Zheng avenged their regular-season loss to the Clippers' duo of sophomore Angelica Karlsson Hantzis (Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain) and Josefina Torres Martin (Miami, Fla.) with a 6-1 result.

• GBC clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 decision on court three over senior Kristel Kalm (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Katrina Sta Cruz (Las Vegas, Nev.) 

• At the second doubles flight, Senior Tadi Mrewa (East London, South Africa) and sophomore Franziska Putschbach's (Moenchweiler, Germany) match against Anna Hortelano Pey and Kristin Radeke ended unfished with a 5-2 score.

• Kalm fell at the second singles slot 6-3, 6-1 to Zheng.

• Freshman Hillary Sherpa (Ridgefield, Conn.) dropped a 6-2, 6-1 contest on court six to move Goldey-Beacom one point away from their third-straight CACC Championship final.

• Mrewa started the rally for Concordia, besting Maria Bruno 7-5, 6-4 at the fourth flight.

• Torres Martin overcame a 6-2 opening set defeat against Hortelano Pey with 6-1 and 6-3 victories to prevail on court three.

• Putschbach outlasted Elin Anderson at the fifth position in a three-set thriller 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

• With the overall score tied 3-all, Karlsson Hantzis handed CACC Player of the Year Post her second-consecutive defeat in singles play with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 victory to end the match.

Concordia takes on Wilmington University (Del.) in the championship finals at the Edgewood Bath & Tennis Club in Middlebury, Conn. on Sunday, Oct. 21 at noon.
