2010-2011Athletics Awards Banquet

 

The 2010-2011 Concordia College Clippers Athletics Awards Banquet was held on the evening of Friday, April 29, 2011 in Schoenfeld Hall on the Concordia College campus. 

The athletes were recognized team by team and their triumphs highlighted.  In addition to each teams recognition, nine awards were handed to Student-Athletes who represent the highest standards in several areas.  Awards are given to the Male and Female Freshman of the Year, the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Director of Athletics Award, the Ester Petzke Rockhill Award in Women's Athletics and the Mickey Byrne Award in Men's Athletics.

Below are the winners of the awards.  

 

Female Freshman of the Year

 



This award is given to the female freshman athlete that best exemplifies the characteristics of a Student-Athlete. 

 



This year's recipient is Rachel Cannata of the Women's Softball Team.  Cannata appeared in 18 games in the pitching circle and held an 8-5 record.  She helped the Clippers get back to the CACC Tournament for the second straight year.  Cannata led the team with a 2.22 ERA.  She also held one of the teams highest batting averages as she hit .344.  Cannata was also a three time Rookie of the Week for the CACC.

 




 

 



Male Freshman of the Year

 



This award is given to the male freshman athlete that best exemplifies the characteristics of a Student-Athlete. 

 



This year's recipient is Daniele Piludu of the Men's Tennis Team.  Piludu, the CACC Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-Conference first team in addition to claiming Rookie of the Year honors.  He is one of the highest ranked freshmen in Division Ii and stands 28th in the country in singles and second in the region.  He is also sixth in the country in doubles and first in the region.  Pilusu stands 12-2 overall in singles this season, primarily at the No. 2 spot.  He is also 2-0 at No. 1 singles and sports an 11-4 overall mark in doubles.  He went undefeated against CACC foes in both singles and doubles this season.

 

 


 



  Female Scholar Athlete Award 

 



This award is given to the Senior Female Student-Athlete with the highest overall GPA.  This year's recipient is Amanda Eggink from the Women's Basketball Team.  Amanda Eggink was named to the 2010-2011 Winter All-Academic Team.  Eggink studying Elementary Education is also a second time CACC All-Academic honoree.  

 



 

 

 

 


 



Male Scholar Athlete Award

 



This award is given to the Senior Male Student-Athlete with the highest overall GPA.  This year's recipient is Billy O'Connell of the Men's Baseball Team.  O'Connell, a four year member of the Clippers has scored 21 times during his senior year with 28 hits.  O'Connell has recorded 328 putouts from first base during the 2011 season.  Billy is currently ranked 44th in the CACC in batting average and is 401st on the NCAA Division II Triples List.  He was a member of the Fellows program at Concordia and will receive his degree in Biology graduating cum laude.

Director of Athletics Award

 



The Director of Athletics Award is an award that is given out annually to the Student-Athlete who best embodies the characteristics of hard work, sacrifice, dedication and a fighting Clipper spirit. 

 



This year's first recipient is Ola Roberts of the Women's Tennis Team.  Roberts, a two year member of the Clippers, has led the Clippers in back to back seasons to the CACC Championship and NCAA Tournament.  Roberts is a perfect 16-0 in singles and 15-1 in doubles.  She is currently ranked 2nd in the East Region in singles and 1st in doubles.    

 



 

 

 

 



This year's second recipient is Jaime Lorenzo of the Women's Softball team.  Lorenzo, a four year member of the Clippers, who has helped change the path for Clippers softball as she has helped lead the team to their first CACC Tournament in her junior year and then back to the tournament this year.   

 



 

 

 

This year's third recipient is Will Eason of the Men's Basketball Team.  Eason, the Clippers center, took on a new coach once more in his career and was on track for his 1,000-1,000 goal.  Eason hit his 1,000th point during the year and was 88 rebounds shy of 1,000 rebounds when he was sidelined for the rest of the season with an injury.  Eason led the Clippers in rebounds this season.

Esther Petzke Rockhill Award in Women's Athletics

 



This award is given to the female athlete who best exemplifies the characteristics of hard work, determination, excellence, and sportsmanship.

This year's winner is Alexa Rosella of the Women's Softball Team.  Rosella, a four year member of the softball team helped change the program as they worked their way to back to back CACC Tournament appearances and to being the 2011 CACC Regular Season Co-Champions.  Rosella earned a 2011 CACC First Team All-Conference honor.  She is one of hte top batters for the Clippers as she is hitting .386 with 149 hits including 10 doubles and 24 RBI's and 29 runs scored.  Rosella also boasts a 9-4 record from the pitching circle with 101 k's on the season.

Mickey Byrne Award in Men's Athletics

 



This award is given to the male athlete who best exemplifies the characteristics of hard work, determination, excellence, and sportsmanship.

This year's recipient is TJ Walsh of the Men's Baseball Team.  Walsh, a senior captain on the Baseball team, has helped lead the Clippers with a batting average of .307 with 43 hits including 10 doubles and 22 RBI's and 25 runs scored.  Walsh has played multiple positions including first baseman, catcher and designated hitter as he has worked his way back to the field after an injury a few years ago.
