BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Concordia Clippers women's volleyball team returned home on Wednesday evening for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division match against Nyack College. Concordia would hit a season-high .340 en-route to a 3-0 shutout victory against the Warriors in the Meyer Athletic Center.
The opening set began with the Clippers taking a 14-9 lead following a 4-0 run to gain control of the scoreboard. Nyack would close the gap to one point but Concordia responded with three unanswered points to force the Warriors to take a timeout. From here the Clippers ended the set on a 8-5 run to claim a 25-18 first set win.
In the second set Nyack would take the early 5-3 lead until six unanswered points by Concordia gave them a 9-5 lead. The Warriors would respond with a 5-0 run of their own later in the set to take a 12-11 advantage but the Clippers bounced back to regain the lead after four unanswered points. After the set was knotted at 17-17, Concordia would score three straight points as Nyack would call a timeout. The Warriors would score a point to stop the run but the Clippers ended the set on a 5-0 run to take a 25-18 victory and a 2-0 overall lead in the match.
Concordia would use four unanswered points in the third set to break a 7-7 tie and gain control of the scoreboard. Nyack would attempt a comeback following a timeout but a 14-6 run for the Clippers to end the set would put them in control as Concordia would go on to take the third set, 25-16, and claim a 3-0 shutout win over the Warriors.
Freshman Sydney Darden (Marietta, Ga.) led the Clippers with a match-high 14 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. Freshman Katharina Birgmeir (Munich, Germany) added nine kills while junior Liliana Gonzalez (Barceloneta, Puerto Rico) added seven kills on the offensive end. Freshman Jenny Martin (Simi Valley, Calif.) would record a match-high 38 assists while freshman Delaney Stuhr (Thornton Colo.) and Birgmeir each recorded eight digs.
Concordia (3-12, 2-11 CACC) will be back on the court at home this Saturday afternoon. The Clippers will host Goldey-Beacom for a 1 p.m. match as fans unable to attend can follow the action via the live stats and video links under the women's volleyball schedule page on ConcordiaClippers.com.
