BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Concordia women's soccer team played in their first home game of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Holtdorf Soccer Field. The Clippers and Nyack would play into overtime to decide a victor as the Warriors scored the golden goal midway through the extra period to secure a 2-1 win in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) showdown.
Both teams showcased an impressive first half with the defenses being the main focus. No goals would be scored in the first 45 minutes of action as the teams combined for only six shots.
In the second half Concordia would strike first in the 65th minute. Junior Flavia Santana (Queens, N.Y.) controlled the ball near the sideline of the offensive side of the field and slide a short pass to freshman Haley Horn (Centennial, Colo.). Horn turned into the middle of the field and found junior Jennifer Forlini (Yonkers, N.Y.) cutting towards the top of the 18-yard box. Forlini did not hesitate and sent a rocket of a shot over the head of Nyack's goalkeeper to give Jennifer her first collegiate goal and the Clippers a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors scored the equalizer in the 81st minute as a free kick by Diana Hernandez went straight towards Concordia's junior goalkeeper, Samantha Street (Granite Falls, Wash.), and was rebounded by Rebekah Lawler who scored her first goal of the season. Neither team could score during the remainder of regulation as the game would go into overtime.
The Clippers began the overtime period controlling the ball and outplaying their competitor. Nyack would counter midway through the period with a run down the sideline by Jessica Short who then crossed the ball into the box and Nikki Burns found the back of the net to give the Warriors a 2-1 victory.
Street finished the game for Concordia with six saves as the Clippers were out-shot 16-6 in the game. This was the second straight game for Concordia in which they played in an overtime game.
The Clippers (0-1-1, 0-1-0 CACC) will next host Holy Family on Saturday afternoon back at Holtdorf Soccer Field. The CACC match is set to begin at 12 p.m. as fans unable to attend the match can follow the action via the live stats and video links on ConcordiaClippers.com.
