Women’s Basketball Edged By Dominican, 59-55

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman forward Jaayden Lafontant (Theills, N.Y.) eclipsed double-digit rebounds for the first time in her collegiate career on Wednesday evening, falling one point shy of her first double-double in the Concordia College New York women's basketball team's 59-55 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) setback against visiting Dominican College (N.Y.).

NOTES
• Concordia falls to 3-13, 2-5 in CACC action.

• Dominican improves to 7-9,5-2 in league play.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior guard Nicole Nicholson (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points  with a career-high-matching four assists and four steals.

• Freshman guard Christina Brown (Ardmore, Pa.) scored 12 points with half coming from the free throw line while chipping in six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.

• Six of Lafontant's team-leading rebounds came off the offensive glass.

• For Dominican, Khay;ka Latimer scored 13 points while Taylor Tomlinson chipped in 11 with 19 rebounds and four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After each side scored a basket to begin the opening quarter, Dominican scored six-straight to pull ahead early 8-2 with 7:49 remaining in the frame. Concordia made it a one-possession game at 10-8, but back-to-back points from the visitor made it 14-8 with 3:45 left in the quarter. The Clippers took the lead off an 8-0 run, connecting on a free throw and triple following a Chargers' basket which knotted the score to hold a 20-16 advantage with 23 seconds left. Dominican scored a three pointer with under 10 remaining to make it 20-19.

• Dominican scored the opening basket of the second quarter before back-to-back layups by the Clippers made it 24-21. The visitors made it a one-point game with the ensuing basket, but a 9-0 Concordia run created a double-digit lead at 33-23 with 1:15 remaining in the half. Concordia added three free throws to its total over the final minute of the quarter, while DC connected on one to make it 36-24 at the intermission.

• The visitors started the third quarter with eight of the initial 10 points to make it 38-31 with 7:32 remaining in the frame. Concordia countered with a 7-0 run to recreate its double-digit advantage at 45-31, but the Chargers ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to create a 47-41 score going into the final 10 minutes.  

• Following three-point plays from each side to begin the final quarter, the Chargers scored five-straight to get within one at 50-49 with 5:34 left to play. Junior guard Shanice Graves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) connected on a jumper to extend the separation to three points, only for four-straight DC points propelling the visitors to a  53-52 advantage with 2:49 remaining. Lafontant flipped the one-point lead with a jumper, but a Dominican basket on the ensuing possession and free throw gave them a 56-54 lead with 21 seconds left. Brown cut the deficit in half with a free throw, but the visitors scored the final three points of the contest to create the final score.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Clippers converted on 19-61 shots, going 3-15 from three-point territory and 14-27 from the free throw line.

• Dominican finished 19-58 from the field, 2-13 from distance and 19-31 from the free throw line.

• Concordia recorded 13 assists while Dominican had 14.

• Dominican held a 53-38 advantage in rebounds.

• Concordia committed 20 turnovers, resulting in 12 points for Dominican. The visitors had 25 turnovers, leading to 20 points.

• Concordia recorded 10 steals with five blocks while the Dominican had 10 steals with 11x blocks.

• Concordia got six points from its bench while Dominican got 10.
