BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Concordia College New York women's basketball team kicked off the home portion of its 2019-20 schedule on Tuesday evening, tying for the 10th-most blocked shots in a game in the program record book in an 89-53 setback to visiting Pace University.
NOTES
• Concordia falls to 0-5.
• Pace improves to 3-1.
• The Clippers' eight rejections are the most since the 2017-18 season.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior guard Nicole Nicholson (Staten Island, N.Y.) matched her season-high with 16 points with three steals and three rebounds.
• Sophomore forward Amaya Rich (White Plains, N.Y.) chipped in nine points with three rebounds and a block in her Clipper debut.
• Freshman guard Christina Brown (Ardmore, Pa.) dished out five assists with as many rebounds.
• Sophomore guard Sara Hopkins (Mountain Top, Pa.) contributed five rebounds and seven points.
• Freshman forward Jaayden Lafontant (Thiells, N.Y.) recorded two blocks.
• For Pace, Brianna Wong boasted 25 points with six assists while Lauren Schetter and Naya Rivera each pulled down seven boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Concordia jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with 8:30 left in the first quarter off a layup from Nicholson and triple from Hopkins. Pace countered with back-to-back baskets to get within one at 5-4, but an equal response by the Clippers made it 9-4 with 5:14 left to play. The visitors ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 13-9 advantage.
• Pace continued its run in the second quarter, using a 14-0 run out of the gate to lead 27-9 with 5:45 left in the half. Graves ended the run with a layup, with the two sides splitting the ensuing 10 points before a 6-3 stretch extended the separation to 38-19 with 1:40 remaining in the half. Graves connected on a jumper for the Clippers' final basket of the half, while a Pace triple with five seconds remaining created a 41-21 halftime score.
• After exchanging the opening six baskets of the second half, Pace used an 11-2 stretch to pull ahead at 60-30 with 3:51 left in the third quarter. The Setters held the Clippers without consecutive baskets after its initial two came back-to-back, with the visitors going into the final quarter up 71-36.
• After swapping 4-0 spurts to start the final frame, the Clippers went on a quick 6-2 stretch to make it 77-46 with 4:46 left to play. Rich, freshman guard Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman guard Toni Kinard (Deer Park, N.Y.) combined to score the Clippers' final seven points, with Pace added 12 to its total to create the final score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Clippers converted on 22-68 shots, going 5-23 from three-point territory and 4-10 from the free throw line.
• Pace finished 34-67 from the field, 8-20 from distance and 13-17 from the free throw line.
• Concordia recorded 11 assists while Pace had 24.
• Pace held a 45-39 advantage in rebounds.
• Concordia committed 15 turnovers, resulting in 25 points for Pace. The Setters had 13 turnovers, leading to 11 points.
• Concordia recorded eight steals with eight blocks while Pace had 11 steals with three blocks.
• Concordia's bench scored 21 points while the Setters got 25 from its bench.
