BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Featuring a young team with no seniors on the roster, the Concordia College New York women's basketball team went 7-21 overall during the 2018-19 campaign with a 5-14 mark in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play while etching its name all over the program's record book.
The women's basketball team began the 2018-19 season at the Merrimack College Tournament, taking on nationally-ranked Bentley University and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-I bound Merrimack. The Clippers won their first game of the season behind an 84-82 victory against Mercy College, only to enter a rigorous three-game stretch capped by NCAA Division II East Regional participant New York Institute of Technology. Concordia entered league play with momentum, defeating Queens College (N.Y.) inside the Meyer Athletic Center.
CACC play kicked off with back-to-back matches against CACC North Division rivals that qualified for the conference tournament via Caldwell University and Post University, with non-conference tilts at postseason-bound St. Thomas Aquinas College and Southern Conn. State University concluding the calendar year.
Opening 2019 on the road at Bloomfield College, Concordia quickly returned to the friendly confines of the MAC for a three-game homestand concluding the stretch with a victory over Wilmington University (Del.). The Clippers swept its CACC North Division series against Nyack College, adding wins against Holy Family University in a contest that saw junior guard Nicole Nicholson (Staten Island, N.Y.) match the team's single-game record with six steals and Felician University behind a program-record 85 points scored and 55.8 field goal percentage down the stretch.
The 2018-19 team dished out 382 assists during the season, the second-most in program history. The Clippers' 1,704 total points, 141 three-pointers made, 13.6 assists per game, 70.6 free throw percentage and 32.4 three-point percentage all rank third in the program record book, with the 609 field goals made during the 2018-19 season and 37.0 field goal percentage both placing fifth.
Nicholson boasted 69 steals during the season, the fifth-most by a Clipper in a single season, on a 2.5 per game rate that also places fifth in the program record book. Her 53 three-point field goals made was the third-most in program history, with sophomore guard Cameron Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) also etching her name in the top-10 of three-pointers made with the ninth-most at 46 while her 397 total points and 36.2 three-point percentage place ninth and seventh in their respective categories. Freshman guard Sara Hopkins (Mountain Top, Pa.) wrote her name in the record book with the seventh-highest free percentage in a season with a 81.4 average, with sophomore forward Sabrina Clement (Queens, N.Y.) recording the ninth-most rebounds in a season with 192 on a 7.1 per game rate that also ranks ninth while junior center Amiya Rankins (Somerset, N.J.) recorded a 49.6 field goal percentage that places sixth.
Corbett led the offense behind a team-best 14.2 points per game, chipping in 3.0 assists per game that finished second on the team behind sophomore guard Saundra Cleckley's (Queens, N.Y.) 3.3 average. Clement pulled down a team-leading 7.1 rebounds, with Nicholson boasting 2.5 steals.
Nicholson collected two CACC weekly nods during the 2018-19 season, being tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 19 and Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 25 to go with Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week distinction. Corbett earned her first Player of the Week accolade on Dec. 3, with Hopkins being named the league's Rookie of the Week on Feb. 25
For her work in the classroom, redshirt-sophomore guard Caitlin Thompson (Bronx, N.Y.) was named to the CACC All-Academic Team.
