Corbett And Hopkins Set Personal-Records For Women’s Basketball In 87-51 Setback At NYIT

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Cameron Corbett (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Concordia College (N.Y.) women's basketball team on Wednesday evening at regionally-ranked New York Institute of Technology, setting a career-high with 18 points in an 87-51 setback to the host Bears.

• Concordia falls to 1-5.

• NYIT improves to 7-1.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Corbett used a .667 field goal percentage (6-9) to set her career-high with two assists and a steal.

• Junior center Amiya Rankins (Somerset, N.J.) scored 16 points on a .556 clip (5-9) with four rebounds, a block and steal.

• Sophomore guard Saundra Cleckley (Queens, N.Y.), the current Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) leader in assists per game, surpassed her quota with five.

• Freshman guard Sara Hopkins (Mountain Top, Pa.) set her career-high in rebounds with five on top of two assists and one steal.

• Sophomore guard Jackie Ciccotto (Staten Island, N.Y.) matched for the team-lead in rebounds with five.

• For NYIT, Meg Knollmeyer boasted 21 points with 12 rebounds while Corinn Baggs and Zoe Amalbert both tallied four assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
• NYIT began the contest with three-straight baskets to take an early 6-0 lead. Concordia cut the separation in half on a three-point play by Corbett, only for a 9-2 stretch for the Bears with Rankins scoring the Clippers' basket creating a double-digit deficit at 15-5. A Ciccotto layup and two made free throws by Rankins sandwiching a pair of NYIT baskets kept the 10-point gap at 19-9 with 2:23 left in the quarter, with Corbett adding a triple for Concordia in the final minute of the half while the host scored six points before the frame ended to make it 25-12.

• Fueled by eight points from Corbett, the Clippers used a 10-4 run at the start of the second quarter to cut the deficit to single-digits at 29-22 with 7:18 remaining in the half. Sophomore forward Sabrina Clement (Queens, N.Y.) and Rankins combined for six points down the stretch for Concordia, who went into halftime down 47-28.

• After NYIT scored a pair of free throws to start the second half, back-to-back layups from Corbett and Rankins made it 49-32 with 8:16 remaining in the quarter. The two sides split the ensuing eight points, with Corbett and Cleckley scoring for Concordia, to make it 53-36 with 5:41 to go in the quarter. The Bears ended the half on a 17-6 run, with Rankins connecting on a pair of free throws and jumper plus Hopkins adding a basket for the Clippers to make it 70-42 heading into the final quarter.

• Junior guard Nicole Nicholson (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter, but a 13-0 run for the hosts created an 83-44 score with 3:11 to play. Hopkins ended the run with a jump shot, only for a pair of free throws and layup for NYIT making it 87-46 with 2:12 remaining. Concordia ended the contest with the final five points off a jumper from Ciccotto plus a layup and free throw from sophomore guard Jordyn Hornbuckle (Hopkinsville, Ky.).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
• The Clippers converted on 19-47 shots, going 3-9 from three-point territory and 10-12 from the free throw line.

• NYIT finished 26-69 from the field, 7-23 from distance and 22-27 from the free throw line.

• Concordia dished out 12 assists versus 18 for the hosts.

• Concordia committed 28 turnovers, resulting in 32 points for NYIT. The Bears committed eight turnovers, leading to eight points.

• NYIT held a 38-33 advantage in rebounds.

• Concordia' bench scored 11 points while NYIT got 29 from its bench.

• Concordia recorded three steals with one block while NYIT stole the ball 15 times with two blocks.
