Women's Basketball Drops Home Opener, 55-45, to Southern Conn. St.

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Concordia Clippers women's basketball team hosted Southern Conn. St. University on Tuesday evening at the Meyer Athletic Center in their first home game of the season. Concordia would be edged in the non-conference showdown, 55-45.

The first quarter saw the Owls score the first points of the game at the 8:17 mark as the visitors led 10-2 with 3:32 to go in the period. The Clippers ended the quarter on a 7-3 run, but Southern Conn. St. led 13-9 after 10 minutes of action.

The Owls began the second quarter with four unanswered points as Concordia would slowly cut into the deficit. The Clippers would only trail by a basket, 19-16, at the 2:52 mark as Concordia looked to keep their offense going in the closing minutes of the half. Southern Conn. St. would end the period on a 5-1 run as the Owls went into the locker room with a 24-17 lead.

In the third quarter Southern Conn. St. would open up a double digit advantage and led 33-22 at the 6:27 mark. The Clippers would struggle offensively during the next few minutes as the Owls led 45-29 with 2:29 to go. From here, Concordia ended the period on an 8-0 run to only trail 45-37 going into the final quarter.

The Clippers continued their momentum in the fourth period as they would begin with a three unanswered points to get within five points, 45-40. Southern Conn. St. would gain some breathing room with a 4-0 run and later on increased their margin to double digits as Concordia was unable to get any closer, falling to the Owls 55-45.

Sophomores Nicole Nicholson (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Taylor Scruggs (Imhotep Institute Charter) both finished with eight points for the Clippers as senior Hadiyah Black (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench.

Concordia (0-5) will next travel to St. Thomas Aquinas for a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon.
