LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Concordia Clippers women's basketball team kicked off their 2017-18 season on Saturday with a non-conference game against The College of Saint Rose in a neutral site game at Georgian Court University. Concordia was unable to begin their season with a victory as the Golden Knights took a 61-43 win at the GCU Wellness Center.
Saint Rose began the first quarter with a 7-3 advantage as the Clippers used their three-point shooting to keep pace. Concordia would lead 9-7 midway through the period, but the Golden Knights ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 16-11 after 10 minutes of action.
In the second quarter the Clippers would cut their deficit to four points, 20-16, as Concordia looked to keep pace. After trailing by only two points with 2:24 to go in the half, the Clippers were out-scored 9-2 as Saint Rose led 33-24 at the break.
The Golden Knights began the third quarter with 13 unanswered points as Concordia trailed 46-24 at the 4:36 mark. The Clippers scored their first points of the period with under three minutes to go as this sparked a 9-2 run during the remainder of the quarter as Saint Rose led 48-33 after three periods.
Concordia would continue to cut into the deficit during the early portion of the fourth quarter as the Clippers trailed 50-41 after an 8-2 run at the 6:53 mark. Concordia was unable to get any closer as the Golden Knights scored 11 of the last 13 points to come away with the 61-43 victory.
Senior Julianne Wilkinson (Red Hook, N.Y.) led the Clippers with 11 points as senior Lyric Blanch (Kingston, N.Y.) added nine points. Redshirt-Junior Brianna Hendrick (Valley Stream, N.Y.) recorded a team-high eight rebounds.
Concordia (0-1) will return to action tomorrow morning to face Saint Anselm back at the GCU Wellness Center.
