ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Concordia College women's basketball team captured their second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win on Saturday afternoon as the Clippers edged Dominican College (N.Y.), 68-65.
The Chargers began the first quarter with a 7-0 lead as Concordia would fall behind in the early going. The Clippers' largest deficit would be 12 points, but Concordia ended the period with four of the last six points as Dominican held a 22-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The Clippers came out in the second quarter with an 11-2 run as Concordia would knot the score at 24-24 at the 6:42 mark. Later in the period the Clippers took their first lead of the game as a jump shot from senior Jessica Rosalbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 1:43 to go put Concordia ahead 33-32. The Clippers ended the quarter with a 7-2 run overall as Concordia held a 37-34 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter the Clippers extend their lead to six points with 4:01 to go as four unanswered points gave them a 51-42 advantage at the 2:43 mark. The Chargers held Concordia scoreless for the remainder of the period as a 4-0 run for Dominican cut their deficit to 51-46 after three quarters.
The Chargers continued their run in the fourth period as seven straight points put the home team back ahead, 53-51. The teams would be neck-and-neck for much of the quarter as the Clippers used a 7-0 run to gain some breathing room, 65-60, with 2:28 to go in regulation. Dominican came back to knot the score at 65-65 with 1:06 to go, but three free throw baskets for Concordia in the closing seconds secured the 68-65 victory.
Rosalbo and junior Lyric Blanch (Kingston, N.Y.) both scored 19 points as Blanch's total would be a new career-high as she came off the bench in the game. Jessica added seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals while Lyric had four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Junior Hadiyah Black (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also scored in double figures as she finished with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Clippers earned their first win at Dominican since Feb. 7, 1985 while snapping a 17-game losing streak against the Chargers.
Concordia (2-5, 2-1 CACC) will return home to host The College of Saint Rose on Thursday evening in a non-conference game.
