Concordia Women's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Game at Southern Conn. St., 69-53

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Concordia College women's basketball team visited Southern Conn. St. on Thursday evening for a non-conference game. The Clippers were unable to come away with the victory as the Owls took the 69-53 win.

In the first quarter Concordia held the early 5-2 lead as the Clippers held the momentum on the scoreboard up until the 6:55 mark. Southern Conn. St. used five straight points to open up a four-point advantage as Concordia responded with back-to-back baskets to knot the score at 10-10 with 4:46 to go in the period. The Clippers were held scoreless for the remainder of the quarter as the Owls held a 13-10 lead.

The second quarter saw Southern Conn. St. score the first points as Concordia broke their scoring drought with a layup at the 7:12 mark. This sparked a 5-0 run as the Clippers would tie the score at 15-15 with 6:41 remaining in the half. The Owls regained their lead with eight unanswered points and a 9-5 run for the home team gave Southern Conn. St. the 32-23 advantage at the half.

Once again Concordia would use another run to get back into the game, this time a 7-0 run to begin the third quarter saw the Clippers cut their deficit to a basket at 32-30 at the 6:52 mark. The Owls would then use a 21-3 run to close out the quarter and hold a 53-33 advantage going into the final period.

Concordia scored five straight points in the early going of the fourth quarter and used a 6-2 run overall to cut their deficit to 57-41with 6:56 to go. The Clippers looked to use a late comeback as their 7-0 run shifted the momentum, but in the end they could not catch Southern Conn. St. as the Owls held on for the 69-53 victory.

Junior Jessica Rosalbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) led Concordia with a season-high 22 points as she also added four rebounds. Freshman Courtney Fleming (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points and three assists in her first collegiate start while sophomore Brianna Hendrick (Valley Stream, N.Y.) added seven points and a season-high 11 rebounds.

The Clippers (1-6) will next visit Dowling on Tuesday, December 15th for another non-conference game.
