Concordia Opens Season with 74-53 Defeat at Queens (N.Y.)

Flushing, N.Y. – The Concordia College Clippers women's basketball team opened up their 2012-13 schedule on Friday evening at Queens College (N.Y.). Concordia took on the Knights in the opening game of the Clarion LaGuardia Tip-Off Tournament as Queens would snap a 20-game losing streak after defeating the Clippers, 74-53.

The Knights would grab an early 14-5 lead as a three-point basket by sophomore KellyAnn Sullivan (Amity Harbor, N.Y.) cut Concordia's deficit to only three points at 17-14. The Clippers were unable to tie the game as the team fell behind on the scoreboard but a 6-0 run with under six minutes to play in the half got them back to within three points. Queens managed to keep the lead into halftime as Concordia trailed 39-33.

In the second half the Clippers would keep the score close during the first 10 minutes. Following a foul shot by sophomore Anjali Moncrieffe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at the 10:15 mark Concordia would struggle offensively.

With the score favoring the Knights, 52-48, the defense for Queens would prevent the Clippers from scoring during the final 10 minutes. Concordia would only record five points in that span as the Knights would go on to take the 74-53 win. The win for Queens is the first since the 2008-09 season as the Knights now lead the head-to-head series 24-11.

Senior Krystina Agard (Queens, N.Y.) led the Clippers in scoring with 10 points as she was the only player to score in double figures for Concordia. She also added a team-high seven rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes of action. Sophomore Megan Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) came off the bench to score seven points as the team shot 28.0% (14-of-50) from the floor.

The Clippers (0-1, 0-0 CACC) will battle The College of Saint Rose tomorrow afternoon to conclude their schedule at the Clarion LaGuardia Tip-Off Tournament. Concordia will take to the court of Townsend Harris High School at 1pm as the team looks to capture their first win of the season.
