Bronxville, NY – The Concordia College Clippers women's basketball team battled Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent the University of the Sciences this afternoon. After trailing by five points with less than three minutes to play, the Clippers used their three-point shooting to capture a 74-69 victory over the Devils.
Concordia and USciences began the game trading baskets until Krystina Agard (Queens, NY) made a three-point shot to give the Clippers a five point lead. The Devils responded with 5-0 run to tie the game with 9:26 left in the first half.
For the remainder of the half, neither team could open up a lead larger than four points which USciences accomplished after a jump shot with 1:14 to go in the period. The basket concluded an 8-2 run for the Devils as they went into the locker room with a 35-32 lead.
In the second half began with a 7-2 run by USciences as they increased their lead to eight, their largest of the game. Concordia responded with a 12-5 run to get back within a point with 12:55 remaining.
Following an 8-3 run by the Devils, the Clippers found themselves down by seven with 6:19 to go. Agard began driving down the lane as she made three straight layups for Concordia and got them within a basket with 3:03 left.
The Clippers then looked to their three-point shooting to get the lead as Mariah Berry (Southington, CT) knocked down two in a row and Sade Jones (Patterson, NJ) made one as well. Jones' three-point basket gave Concordia a 71-69 lead with 49 seconds remaining.
A turnover by USciences with 23 seconds to go forced them to foul the Clippers in hopes to have a chance at tying the game. After Agard sank both foul shots, the Devils were unable to score again as Concordia won for the sixth time this season.
Agard led the Clippers in scoring with 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field. She also had six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in 40 minutes of action. Chanessa Blakemore (Albany, NY) led the team with game-high 16 rebounds while Jones added 13 points and Berry chipped in with 11 points. As a team, Concordia shot 40.6% (26-of-64) from the field and made 10 three-point baskets.
The Clippers (6-13, 5-7 CACC) will play their next game this Wednesday, February 1st, to wrap up a three game home stand. Concordia will take to the court of the Meyer Athletic Center at 5pm to battle Felician College.
