Nyack, NY – The Concordia College Clippers women's basketball team battled Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent the Nyack Warriors for the second time this evening. After the game was sent into overtime, a jump shot by Concordia's Sade Jones (Patterson, NJ) at the buzzer gave the Clippers a 74-72 victory.
Concordia began the game jumping out to a 14-0 lead as they looked to be in control. The Clippers kept scoring at will as they increased their lead to 30-12 midway through the first half. In the last 10 minutes of the half, the Warriors matched Concordia point for point and the Clippers went into the locker room with a 39-21 lead.
In the second half, Nyack began to chip into Concordia's lead in the opening moments. With 10:26 remaining in the period, the Warriors converted on a three point play opportunity to cut their deficit to only 10 points. They would get within five points after a jump shot fell with 2:11 remaining. Nyack ended the period on a 6-1 run to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Clippers managed to take a four point lead after Megan Burns (Staten Island, NY) made both her free throws at the 2:01 mark. With under 35 seconds remaining the Warriors fouled Concordia as they trailed by two points. The Clippers made one of their two free throws and Nyack had the ball with a chance to tie the game.
The Warriors would get to the foul line two more times and tie the game at 72-72 with 13 seconds remaining. With time running out and Concordia in possession, Jones dribbled towards the foul line and put up an off balance shot with time expiring as the ball went through the hoop shocking the Nyack crowd.
Jones led the Clippers with 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field as she also added six rebounds and four assists. Chanessa Blakemore (Albany, NY) added 19 points and a team high 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. As a team, Concordia shot 32.9% (24-of-73) from the field as the bench for the Clippers outscored the Warriors' bench 20-11.
Concordia (5-10, 4-4 CACC) will be on the road again this Thursday for a conference match against Bloomfield College. The Clippers will tip-off their game at 6pm at the Bloomfield Gymnasium in Bloomfield, NJ.
