Softball Splits Doubleheader With Jefferson

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Concordia College New York softball team began the final week of its season on Monday evening with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against Jefferson University, fending off a seventh-inning rally from the visitors after taking the lead behind a six-run fourth inning for a 6-5 victory in the opener before falling in the second outing 6-2.

NOTES
• Concordia moves to 12-22, 8-16 in CACC play.

• Jefferson moves to 17-25, 12-14 in league action.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 1)
• Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Ryder (New Rochelle, N.Y.) went 2-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

• Senior catcher Tori Tansley (Old Forge, Pa.) went 2-3 with a RBI and run scored.

• Freshman right fielder Jordan Bordonaro (Lake Grove, N.Y.) went 2-4 with one RBI.

• Junior RHP MacKenna Powell (Milford, Pa.) tossed a complete game, allowing five runs with two earned off nine hits in the victory.

• For Jefferson, Naomi Stas went 3-4 with a RBI and run scored on top of 2.2 scoreless innings while Breck Urban went 2-4 with two RBI. Stephanie Pepper got the start, allowing six runs off nine hits in 3.1 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
• Leading off the top of the third with a single, Madison Heno sent a pinch-running Samantha Hurtado home on a RBI groundout before three-straight base hits from Winnai Hoyt, Stas and Urban platted Hoyt and created a 2-0 lead.

• Leading off the bottom of the fourth with a double, freshman second baseman Ellen Little (Port Deposit, Md.) and freshman designated hitter Ashdon Clark (Gouldsboro, Pa.) rounded the bases off a one-out double from Ryder with a Tansley double sending Ryder home before a bases-loaded hit by pitch for sophomore center fielder Kiana Sauter (Waymart, Pa.), single from Bordonaro and walk for Little platted Tansley, Beltz and junior third baseman Carly Acuña (North Hills, Calif.) and pushed Concordia ahead 6-2.

• Jefferson capitalized on a Concordia error to begin the top of the seventh to get Hurtado on base, with Heno sending her home on a sacrifice fly before back-to-back singles from Stas and Urban scored Erin Maher and Stas to make it 6-5.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1)
• Both teams recorded nine hits.

• The Clippers left four runner on base, Jefferson stranded seven.

• Concordia committed two errors.

• Jefferson stole one base.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 2)
• Clark went 1-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored.

• Ryder went 1-2 with a RBI and walk.

• Freshman Madison Shura (Wallingford, Conn.) started game two, allowing five runs off nine hits in 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.

• For Jefferson, Hoyt went 3-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while Heno went 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, Stas got the start on the mound, allowing two runs off two hits with six strikeouts in a complete-game win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
• Reaching base via a hit by pitch with two outs in the bottom of the first, freshman catcher Carly Berezny (Oxford, N.J.) scored off a triple from Clark with a Ryder single sending her home to give Concordia an early 2-0 lead.

• Leading off the top of the fourth with a triple, Hoyt touched home off a RBI groundout from Urban to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

• Back-to-back doubles from Heno and Hoyt to start the top of the sixth platted Heno, with a one-out single from Urban sending Hoyt home and propelling the visitors to a 3-2 advantage.

• Reaching base with a one-out single, Hurtado and Maher scored off a Heno single with a Clippers' error allowing Heno to round the bases and create a 6-2 score.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 2)
• Concordia tallied two hits, the Rams had 11.

• The Clippers left four runners on base, Jefferson stranded five.

• Both sides committed one error.

UP NEXT
The softball team hosts Goldey-Beacom College in the 2019 season finale on Tuesday, April 30 with first pitch for the conference doubleheader slatted for 2 p.m. at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, N.Y.
