Career-Highs Powers Softball To Doubleheader Sweep Of USciences

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Ryder (New Rochelle, N.Y.) recorded a career-high three RBI in the opening contest on Sunday afternoon with freshman left fielder Jordan Bordonaro (Lake Grove, N.Y.) setting her personal record with three hits in the second outing, leading the Concordia College New York softball team to its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) sweep of the season behind scores of 5-3 and 4-3 over host University of the Sciences.

NOTES
• Concordia improves to 9-9 overall, 5-5 in CACC play.

• USciences falls to 3-17, 2-6 in league action.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 1)
• Ryder went 1-2 with three RBI and one walk.

• Freshman left fielder Carly Berezny (Oxford, N.J.) went 1-3 with one RBI and one walk.

• Sophomore RHP Ashley Walsh (Scranton, Pa.) earned the victory, holding the host to three runs off five hits in the complete-game win.

• For USciences, Madison LaPlante went 2-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Kaitlyn Gaynor tossed a complete game, allowing five runs with four earned off four hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
• Concordia loaded the bases in the top of the first off a Bordonaro single and back-to-back walks for Berezny and freshman first baseman Ashdon Clark (Gouldsboro, Pa.), scoring all three on a one-out Ryder double to take a 3-0 lead.

• Leading off the bottom of the first with a walk, USciences made it 3-1 off a Laplante double that sent Gabrielle Simms home.

• Beginning the bottom of the third with a leadoff triple, Miranda Rodrgiuez rounded the bases off a LaPlante single with the Devil later touching home plate on a Kaitlyn Gaynor single to even the score at 3-3.

• The Clippers loaded the bases in the top of the fourth via back-to-back walks for senior catcher Tori Tansley (Old Forge, Pa.) and Ryder plus an USciences error, with senior center fielder Audrey Gardus (Carbondale, Pa.) sending Tansley home on a groundout to make it 4-3.

• Reaching base on a two-out walk in the top of the seventh, freshman second baseman Ellen Little (Port Deposit, Md.) rounded the bases off a Berezny double to extend the separation to 5-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1)
• Concordia tallied four hits with three going for extra bases while the Devils had five.

• The Clippers left five runner on base, USciences stranded six.

• Both sides had one error.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 2)
• Bordonaro went 3-4 with one RBI.

• Little went 1-3 with two runs scored.

• Berezny went 2-3 with one RBI.

• Junior RHP MacKenna Powell (Milford, Pa.) earned the victory in a complete-game outing, holding the Devils to three runs off 10 hits.

• For USciences, Simms went 3-4 with three runs scored while LaPlante went 1-3 with two RBI. Paige Schlechter received the loss for the Devils, tossing the final 3.0 innings with one run allowed off two hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
• Concordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, using a Clark groundout to score Little.

• The Devils evened the score in the bottom of the first, using a leadoff double from Simms with LaPlante platting her off a single..

• Leading off the top of the second with a single, sophomore third baseman Carly Acuña (North Hills, Calif.) touched home plate off a two-out Bordonaro single to make it 2-1.

• USciences used a sacrifice fly from LaPlante to score Simms, who led the frame with a double, and knot the score at 2-all.

• Opening the top of the fourth with a double, sophomore right fielder Kiana Sauter (Waymart, Pa.) scored off a sacrifice fly from Berezny to give the Clippers a 3-2 lead.

• The Devils used doubles from Sims and Pustizzi in the bottom of the fifth to score Simms and tie it at 3-3.

• Leading off the top of the seventh with a single, Little touched home plate off a wild pitch to put Concordia ahead 4-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 2)
• Concordia recorded nine hits, the Devils tallied 10.

• The Clippers left seven runners on base, USciences stranded nine.

• Concordia had three errors, USciences committed two.

• USciences stole one base.

The softball team returns to the friendly confines of the Clipper Softball Field on Thursday, April 4 to host Caldwell University in a doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m.
