BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Concordia Clippers softball team returned to action on Monday to host the Nyack Warriors for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Clipper Softball Field. Concordia would be upended in game one, 6-3, but bounced back for a 4-2 win in the second game to earn the split.
Nyack got the scoring started in the top of the third with a pair of runs with two outs to take the 2-0 advantage. The Clippers would answer in the home half of the inning as senior Carly Mertens (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded a RBI single to right field and sophomore Allison Beltz (Whitehall, Pa.) would score on an error as the score was knotted at 2-2.
In the top of the fourth the scoring would continue as the Warriors grabbed a lone run. Once again, Concordia would match their opponent as the Clippers would score a run of their own with Beltz adding a RBI to tie the score back up at 3-3.
Nyack managed to score three more runs in the sixth as Concordia was held scoreless for the remainder of the game to allow the Warriors to take the 6-3 victory. Junior Sarah Ross (Dunmore, Pa.) pitched the complete game for the Clippers in the defeat as she allowed two earned runs on nine hits and struck out four batters.
Game two began with Concordia scoring early as the Clippers recorded three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Tori Tansley (Old Forge, Pa.), Mertens, and Ross all recorded RBI's as Concordia quickly jumped out to a 3-0 advantage. Neither side was able to score until the Clippers added a lone run in the sixth as senior Jessica Rosalbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored on an error to put Concordia ahead 4-0.
Down to their last at-bats, Nyack would begin the seventh with a pair of singles as the Warriors looked to mount a late comeback. Nyack was able to bring in two runs, but that would be all as the Clippers held on to the 4-2 win. Freshman Shayla Peterson (Bethlehem, Pa.) earned the win for Concordia as she pitched the complete game with no earned runs while allowing eight hits and striking out four batters.
