ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Concordia College softball team continued their strong play in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action with a pair of victories over Nyack College on Tuesday afternoon. The Clippers took the first game, 4-0, then followed with a 2-1 win against the Warriors at South Orangetown Field as their winning streak has been extended to seven games.
The first three innings of game one saw neither team record a hit as it was a pitcher's duel to begin the game. Concordia would break the scoreless drought in the top of the fourth with four runs, all occurring with two outs in the inning. Senior Alexa Lavalle (Oxford, N.J.) brought home the first two runs with a double to left-center field then freshman Tori Tansley (Old Forge, Pa.) brought in the other two runs off her first collegiate home run. Nyack would record only one hit in the game which happened in the bottom of the fourth as the Clippers took the opening game, 4-0.
Sophomore Sarah Ross (Dunmore, Pa.), the reigning CACC Pitcher of the Week, earned her fifth straight victory for Concordia as she threw a one-hit shutout and struck out three batters in the complete game.
Game two saw the Clippers get on the scoreboard first with a lone run in the top of the first inning. Ross would hit a single up the middle of the infield which allowed senior Brittany Lampert (Shelton, Conn.) to score from second base. The Warriors would knot the score in the home half of the first off a passed ball.
The go-ahead run for Concordia came in the third inning as freshman Audrey Gardus (Carbondale, Pa.) scored from third base on a RBI ground out by Ross. Nyack failed to record a hit over the next three innings, but would threaten in the sixth inning. The Warriors had a runner on third base in the sixth as senior Hannah Rubasky (Nanticoke, Pa.) did not allow a run to score. Nyack was unable to get anything going in their last at-bats as the Clippers held on for the 2-1 victory.
Rubasky earned the win for Concordia after pitching a complete game allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out one batter.
The Clippers (12-5, 8-2 CACC) will return home for their next games on Saturday, April 2nd. Concordia is scheduled to host the University of the Sciences for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Clipper Softball Field.
