Concordia Softball Concludes Florida Trip with 7-1 Win Over Nyack and 8-5 Defeat to Shippensburg

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Concordia Clippers softball team concluded their Florida trip on Thursday afternoon with matchups against Nyack and Shippensburg at the NTC Complex. Concordia would take a 7-1 win over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Nyack in a non-conference game and then follow with an 8-5 defeat to Shippensburg.

Against the Warriors, the Clippers would score a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take an early 2-0 lead as both senior Victoria Vickerman (Clinton, Conn.) and sophomore Sarah Ross (Dunmore, Pa.) recorded RBI doubles in the inning. Concordia extended their lead in the top of the sixth as another RBI double for Vickerman scored freshman Audrey Gardus (Carbondale, Pa.) and a RBI single for freshman Allison Beltz (Whitehall, Pa.) brought home Vickerman.

In the top of the seventh the Clippers capped their scoring with three runs as a RBI triple for Gardus allowed sophomore Cassidy Gorgo (Millville, N.J.) and junior Carly Mertens (Freeport, N.Y.) to score. Later in the inning Vickerman recorded her third RBI of the game as her single allowed Gardus to come in from third base for the 7-0 advantage. Nyack would lead off with a solo home run in their last at-bats for their only run of the game as Concordia took a 7-1 victory.

Senior Hannah Rubasky (Nanticoke, Pa.) picked up the win for the Clippers as she pitched five innings allowing only one hit while striking out five batters. Gorgo finished the final two innings for Concordia as she allowed one run on two hits.

Game two against Shippensburg, the Raiders led off with four runs in the top of the first inning as the Clippers would respond with three runs of their own. Vickerman, Ross, and Mertens would all record RBI singles in the home half of the first as Concordia trailed 4-3.

The scoring would continue as Shippensburg added two more runs to their total in the top of the second. Once again the Clippers would respond with runs of their own, this time a pair of runs courtesy of a two-RBI single from Ross to get Concordia withing a run again, 6-5.

In the Raiders' next at-bats, they put up two more runs on the scoreboard to take the 8-5 advantage. The Clippers would go the remainder of the game scoreless and managed only three more hits over the last five innings as Shippensburg held on for the 8-5 win.

Ross was tagged with the loss for Concordia as she allowed one earned run on eight hits while striking out four batters in five innings of work. Gorgo came in to finish the last two innings as she recorded two strikeouts and gave up no hits for the Clippers.

Concordia (4-3) will return to New York to prepare for their opening CACC doubleheader on Tuesday, March 15th. The Clippers are set to take on Bloomfield College on the road as first pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m. at Clark's Pond South in Bloomfield, N.J.
