Bronxville, NY – The Concordia College softball team took on Holy Family University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Clippers played in their final games of the 2012 season as they would fall to the Tigers, 7-0 and 6-5, on Senior Appreciation Day.
Prior to the beginning of the first game, Concordia honored their five seniors who would be playing for the final time in a Clipper uniform. Angela D'Amico (Old Bridge, NJ), Maria DeMartino (Staten Island, NY), Victoria Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, NY), Nicole Spadaro (Merrick, NY) and Jenna Stueber (Roosevelt Island, NY) all were recognized for their hard work and dedication over the past four seasons.
Holy Family came into today's games looking to earn a playoff spot as the team needed to win both games to have a chance. The Tigers would jump out to an early 3-0 lead as Concordia struggled offensively. Holy Family added three more runs in the fifth as they controlled the tempo of the game.
The Clippers were unable to counter with any runs of their own as the team combined for only two hits. Theresa Magnani (Bethpage, NY) pitched 7.0 innings for Concordia as she allowed six earned runs on 14 hits while striking out five batters in the loss.
In game two the Clippers' bats would wake up right from the beginning as four runs would cross the plate. D'Amico would reach on a fielder's choice which drove in Alexandra Mandarano (New Rochelle, NY) from third base to begin the inning. Nelyssa Rosario's (Kingsbridge, NY) RBI single would bring home DeMartino while a walk by Spadaro brought the third run of the inning in. Stueber's RBI single to score Kristina Patrocinio (Edison, NJ) brought in the final run of the first as Concordia held a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers got a run back in the second with a solo home run and inched to within a run of the lead in the third after two more runs were scored. Holy Family tied the game in the fourth off an RBI single as the Clippers went cold offensively.
An RBI single to center field by the Tigers gave them their first lead of the game at 5-4. Concordia responded in the home half of the inning with a run off an error in the infield. Neither team could record a hit in the sixth as the game came down to the final inning.
With two outs in the top of the seventh Holy Family managed to score the go-ahead run off an RBI single to center field. In the Clippers' final at-bats D'Amico got on base with a single but could not be brought home as the Tigers held on for the victory, their 20th of the season.
Amanda Ramirez (Lindenhurst, NY) pitched the complete game for Concordia as she allowed six earned runs on 13 hits in the loss. The Clippers stranded a total of seven runners during the game while Holy Family left 10 runners on base.
