Bronxville, NY – The Concordia College softball team was back in action on Tuesday afternoon as Post University visited Clipper Softball Field for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Eagles managed to edge the Clippers by one run in both games, 3-2 and 7-6 to improve their conference record to 4-0 on the season.
Concordia began game one with a run in the first inning as Nicole Spadaro (Merrick, NY) hit an RBI single that brought Maria DeMartino (Staten Island, NY) in from third base. Post would not get onto the scoreboard until the top of the fourth inning when two runs crossed the plate to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
The Clippers scored the game tying run in the bottom of the sixth when Kristina Patrocinio (Edison, NJ) hit an infield sacrifice to score Alexandra Mandarano (New Rochelle, NY). Neither team could score the go-ahead run in the seventh as the game went into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Post managed to score the final run of the game as Concordia was unable to respond in the home half of the inning. Theresa Magnani (Bethpage, NY) suffered her second loss of the season for the Clippers as she pitched all eight innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits while striking out two batters.
Game two featured another close battle between the two teams and after an early run in the top of the first by the Eagles, Concordia would take the lead in their first at-bats. DeMartino led off with a solo home run and later in the inning Spadaro would drive in the second run to give the Clippers a 2-1 advantage. Concordia added another run in the second inning off Victoria Pisciotta's (New Hyde Park, NY) RBI single up the middle of the infield that scored Mandarano from third base.
In the top of the fifth, Post would tie the game off a two RBI double to right-center field. The Clippers responded in the home half of the inning with two runs of their own to regain the lead. With the bases loaded, Laura Brezovsky (Yonkers, NY) hit a single to right-center field which brought two runs across the plate as she advanced into scoring position on the throw from the outfield.
The Eagles responded in the next inning with two more runs as the back-and-forth battle continued on into the closing innings. With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Concordia recaptured the lead off a solo home run by Patrocinio.
Post needed at least a run to stay alive in the seventh inning and the Eagles got two runs to take a 7-6 lead. The Clippers went down in order in their last at-bats as Post won for the fifth time on the season.
Amanda Ramirez (Lindenhurst, NY) pitched 5.2 innings for Concordia as she allowed five earned runs and eight hits while walking seven batters in the no decision. DeMartino came in for relief to finish the last 1.1 innings in the loss for the Clippers as she allowed two unearned runs.
Concordia (6-7, 3-3 CACC) will be back in action this Saturday for another CACC doubleheader. The Clippers will be on the road to battle Philadelphia U. with game one set to being at 12pm.
