Old Westbury, NY - The Bears of the New York Institute of Technology swept both games from the Clippers yesterday by the scores of 4-1 and 8-0 in Old Westbury, NY.

In game 1, Rebecca Stein put the Bears up 1-0 with a 1-out home run in the 1st inning. NYIT would increase the lead to 2-0 in the 6th inning, as Stephanie DeSerio singled up the middle with a runner on second base.

Concordia answered with a run in the bottom half of the 6th inning as sophomore Alex Mazza (Bronx, NY) hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Janine Zezze (Bronxville, NY) from third base.

 

 

In the 7th inning, the Bears would get a leadoff single from Maria Benedicto, who would advance to second base on a sacrifice bunt later in the inning. Ashley Gosk doubled to right field, scoring the runner on second base. Gosk advanced to third base on a wild pitch and would later steal home to give the Bears a 4-1 and be the final run of the game. 

Senior Julianna Labella (Mamaroneck, NY) pitched 6.1 innings in picking up the loss for the Clippers. LaBella gave up 7 hits and 4 earned run, while striking out 6 Bear batters. LaBella's record falls to 3-4 on the season.

In game 2, errors would prove costly for the Clippers as the Bears would score three runs in the top of the 1st inning. NYIT increased their lead to 5-0 in the 5th inning with a 2-run home run to left field by Katelyn Thomas. Two batters later, with runners on first and second, Amanda Graham singled home a run. Michelle Furrs singled home 2 more runs to provide the final score of 8-0. Junior Tara Giralo (Anthem, AZ) pitched 5 innings in the loss for the Clippers, giving up 12 hits and 5 earned runs. Giralo falls to 2-2 on the season.

Concordia has lost 5 straight games and falls to 8-12 overall and 2-10 in the East Coast Conference. NYIT improves to 16-12 overall and 7-3 in the East Coast Conference.

The Clippers will look to get back in the swing of things on Saturday, April 21st, as they host the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM.
