SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Concordia College men's tennis team battled the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Barry University, on Thursday in their NCAA Quarterfinals match. The Clippers were unable to advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals as the Bucs secured a 5-2 win.
Concordia came out in doubles play earning two of the three points as the No. 3 duo of freshman Michele Fenoaltea (Rome, Italy) and freshman Henry Masters (Northampton, England) earned an 8-1 victory against Vivien Versier and Carlos Gomez. Barry would take the No. 2 match, 8-3, as freshman Axel Oljons (Stockholm, Sweden) and freshman William Nilsson (Bastad, Sweden) fell to Pierre Montrieul and Blake Bayldon while juniors Eymeric Chevalier (Bordeaux, France) and Alessandro Evangelisti (Latina, Italy) battled their way to an 8-5 win against Fernando Tous and Filip Zupancic in the No. 1 match to give the Clippers a 2-1 advantage going into the singles matches.
In singles play freshman Tomer Mendler (Tel Aviv, Israel) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Daniel Ventura, the 47th-ranked singles player in the nation, in the No. 4 match. Oljons would fall in his No. 4 match to Bayldon 6-2, 6-1 while Chevalier was defeated by Montrieul, the 8th-ranked player in NCAA DII, 6-2, 6-0. Barry's final win would come in the No. 3 match as Nilsson fell to Versier, the 52nd-ranked player in the nation, 6-3, 6-0. The remaining matches would go unfinished.
