Waterbury, CT – The Concordia College Clippers men's basketball team were back on the road this evening to take on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Post University. After leading at the half, the Clippers only managed to score 18 points in the second half as the Eagles edged Concordia, 56-54.
In the opening minutes of the game, Post took an early 11-4 lead as the Clippers struggled to find their rhythm offensively. Brandon Whitaker (Harlem, NY) then scored seven straight points for Concordia as he helped to get the team back into the game. Norman Pope (Washington, D.C.) then tied the game at 15-15 following a layup at the 11:34 mark.
The Eagles went on a 14-4 run as they were ahead by 10 points with 6:50 remaining in the first half. The Clippers responded with an 8-0 run and took a 36-35 lead after a Lavor Morris (Bronx, NY) three-point basket. Concordia went into the locker room with the one point lead.
In the second half, neither team could find the bottom of the basket as points were hard to come by in the period. The Clippers and Post traded the lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the half with neither team gaining more than a two point lead. The Eagles would pull ahead by five points after a three-point basket with 3:33 remaining.
Whitaker responded with a three-point basket of his own for Concordia at the 1:56 mark. From this point on, neither team could put points on the scoreboard as Post missed four foul shots in the closing seconds. The Clippers had an opportunity to tie the game with two layups but missed on both chances as the Eagles held on for a two point victory.
Argelix Gil (Brooklyn, NY) led the Clippers with a game-high 16 points and 19 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. Whitaker added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists while Morris came off the bench to score nine points. As a team, Concordia shot 30.2% (16-of-53) from the field as they committed 19 turnovers.
The Clippers (10-13, 7-8 CACC) will now have a few days to rest after playing in three games in four days. Concordia will host Holy Family this Saturday, February 11th in the Meyer Athletic Center. Tip-off will be at 3pm following the women's game.
