Baseball Sweeps CACC Foe Bloomfield, 4-3 and 5-4, in Home Opener

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Concordia College baseball team hosted Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Bloomfield College on Wednesday as the Clippers played their first games of the season at Clipper Baseball Field. Concordia would capture one-run wins in both games as the Clippers edged the Bears 4-3 and 5-4.

In the first game Concordia wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as a double down the left field line for freshman Hermes Abreu (Bayshore, N.Y.) drove in two runs in the bottom of the first inning as the Clippers led 2-0. Bloomfield answered back with a lone run in the top of the second to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

The home half of the fifth saw Concordia add two more runs as singles by junior John Calabrese (Lodi, N.J.) and senior Joseph Davide (West Hempstead, N.Y.) would give the Clippers a 4-1 advantage. The Bears answered again in their next at-bats as the visitors scored two runs in the sixth inning to trail by only a run. The score would remain the same for the remainder of the game as Concordia held on for the 4-3 victory.

Senior Dylan Lawrence (Queens, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Clippers as he pitched the complete game allowed three unearned runs on seven hits while striking out eight batters.

Game two saw Concordia score two quick runs in the bottom of the first inning as Davide hit a two-run home run down the left field line, his first of the season. The Clippers would add two more runs in the second as sophomore Kendell Luquis (New Rochelle, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice RBI and freshman Jake Partridge (Bardonia, N.Y.) hit a RBI single up the middle as Concordia led 4-0.

Bloomfield would cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs, but the Clippers added their fifth and final run of the game in the sixth after a RBI double from Luquis. The Bears looked to mount a late comeback in the seventh, scoring two runs off a two-out two-run home run, but Concordia was able to hang on for the 5-4 win.

Junior John Wall (Levittown, N.Y.) secured the victory for the Clippers after pitching 6.2 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out two batters. Sophomore Joseph Impeduglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) came in for the save, his second of the season, as he recorded the final out of the game.

Concordia (8-9, 4-0 CACC) will return to action on Friday as they will host Post University for a CACC doubleheader.
