Concordia Baseball Edged in CACC Doubleheader by Chestnut Hill

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Concordia College baseball team hosted the Chestnut Hill Griffins on Tuesday afternoon for a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) games at Clipper Baseball Field. The Clippers would be edged by Chestnut Hill as the Griffins secured 7-4 and 4-2 wins.

Chestnut Hill began their scoring with a lone run in the second inning, then added three more runs in the fourth to hold a 4-0 lead. The Griffins extended their advantage to 7-0 in the top of the eighth as Concordia only managed one hit up to this point.

The Clippers would break their scoreless drought in the home half of the eighth as sophomore Jaylin Martinez (Paramus, N.J.) and freshman Nicholas Tomaselli (Levittown, N.Y.) were on base with one out. Sophomore Tyler Epple (Levittown, N.Y.) came up to bat for Concordia and hit his first collegiate home run to left-center field as the Clippers would trail 7-3. Concordia added another run later on as junior Joseph Davide (West Hempstead, N.Y.) scored on a balk, but the Clippers were unable to get any closer as Chestnut Hill held on for the 7-4 victory.

Freshman Michael Romano (Yonkers, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss for Concordia as he allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out four batters in 6.0 innings of work. The bullpen combined to finish the last 3.0 innings and gave up three earned runs on two hits and struck out one batter.

Game two saw the Griffins jump out to a 1-0 advantage in the first after a lone run. The Clippers would answer back in the bottom of the second as a single to the outfield brought in freshman Ronmel Ocampo (Levittown, N.Y.) and Davide as Concordia led 2-1.

In the next at-bats for Chestnut Hill, the Griffins would take back the lead as a pair of runs put the visitors back on top, 3-2. Chestnut Hill added an insurance run in the seventh as the Clippers managed only one more hit in the final five innings as the Griffins edged Concordia, 4-2. Senior Thomas Burke (Huntington, N.Y.) pitched 6.1 innings for the Clippers in the defeat as he allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters.

Concordia (3-24, 2-12 CACC) will take a break from their conference schedule to visit Pace University tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. in Pleasantville, N.Y.
