Pomona, N.Y. - The Concordia College baseball team visited Provident Bank Park on Wednesday afternoon for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against the Nyack Warriors. The Clippers were unable to secure a victory as Nyack swept the games 8-2 and 3-1.
Concordia would get on the scoreboard first in game one as junior Cristian Fiorito (Yonkers, N.Y.) led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run. The Warriors would score the game tying run in the home half of the third and then added the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
The Clippers managed to tie the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth as freshman Jason Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a RBI single while allowed sophomore Brian Bilello (Lynbrook, N.Y.) to score from second base. Nyack used a four-run sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead and then added two more insurance runs to take an 8-2 win.
Sophomore Mitchell Hillert (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss for Concordia after allowing six earned runs on six hits while striking out six batters in 6.0 innings of work. Junior Jake Matranga (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished the last 2.0 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits.
In the second game neither team was able to score until the fifth inning when the Warriors scored three runs to take a 3-0 advantage. The Clippers would score their lone run in the top of the ninth after an error by Nyack's catcher allowed junior Ryan Roman (Port Chester, N.Y.) to score following stealing third base. Concordia was unable to mount a late comeback as the Warriors held on for the 3-1 win.
Senior Christopher Rodriguez (Queens, N.Y.) was credited with the loss for the Clippers after he pitched 5.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits while striking out one batter. Junior Andrew Worth (Brewster, N.Y.) came in relief for the final 3.0 innings as he did not allow any runs or hits and struck out five of the 11 batters he faced.
Concordia (4-11, 1-5 CACC) will next take on USciences on Saturday afternoon. The CACC doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa. as the games will be two of four straight against the Devils.
