Concordia Splits CACC Showdown against Nyack

Pomona, NY – The Concordia College Clippers baseball team traveled to face Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Nyack College in an important doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. With the regular season nearing the end, the Clippers captured a victory in game one, 4-1, but fell in the nightcap, 3-2, as Concordia remains in contention for one of the final two playoff spots.

The Clippers began the first game hitless in the opening four innings but the Warriors were unable to score an early run. Concordia grabbed the first runs in the top of the fifth as Joe Gallub (Oceanside, NY) recorded a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Chris Rutigliano (Wantagh, NY) from third base. In the next at-bat, David Perlleshi (Eastchester, NY) drove in the second run off his sacrifice RBI as Cristian Fiorito (Yonkers, NY) crossed home plate.

Gallub and Perlleshi each drove in another RBI in the seventh to give the Clippers a 4-0 lead. Nyack prevented the shutout with a lone run in the ninth as Concordia captured their 11th victory of the season. Anthony Pisano (Clarkstown, NY) pitched the complete game for the Clippers as he allowed one earned run on 10 hits while striking out five batters.

In game two, Concordia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning as Yonatan Rodriguez (Tarrytown, NY) hit a two-RBI single. The Warriors remained off the scoreboard as the Clippers did not allow a run in the first seven innings. Nyack tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run home run.

In the ninth, Concordia was unable to bring home the go-ahead run as the team went hitless. The Warriors recorded a two-out double in the ninth and ended the game with a walk off RBI single to edge out a 3-2 victory.

Felix Lopez (Brooklyn, NY) pitched 7.1 innings for the Clippers as he allowed two earned runs on eight hits while striking out five batters in the no decision. Ted Robertson (Mount Vernon, NY) would be tagged with the loss in his 1.1 innings of work allowing the final run of the game.

Concordia (11-30, 9-10 CACC) will next host non-conference opponent, Dowling College, on Sunday April 29th at Clipper Baseball Field. The game is set to begin at 12pm on Senior Day. The Clippers have one more conference game remaining on their schedule as the makeup game with Felician College is currently being discussed.
