Concordia Tennis Claims Men’s Doubles Championship at ITA East Regionals

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regionals concluded on Monday as the Concordia College men's program captured the doubles championship. The women's program would also participate in the event, which was held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Juniors Alessandro Evangelisti (Latina, Italy) and Eymeric Chevalier (Bordeaux, France) would claim the doubles championship after defeating Rok Bozic and Diego Pinto from the University of the Dist. of Columbia 6-4, 3-6, 11-9. The duo had to win four other matches to make it to the championship match. Freshman William Nilsson (Bastad, Sweden) and freshman Axel Oljons (Stockholm, Sweden) advanced to the quarterfinals, but would fall 8-6 to Bozic and Pinto.

In singles action, Evangelisti and Chevalier both made it to the semi-finals match where the two would face off head-to-head to see who would advance to the championship match. Chevalier would be victorious in the semi-final match 7-5, (Retired) as he would advance to take on the top seed of Matej Selecky of NYIT. Chevalier was unable to also add a singles championship as he dropped a 7-6 (5), 6-2 decision to Selecky.

On the women's side freshman Josefina Torres Martin (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Angelica Karlsson Hantzis (Fuengirola, Malaga, Spain) took down the top seed, Rebecca Fakas and Karen Serina of Adelphi, in the doubles round of 16, 8-3, to advance into the quarterfinals. The duo was unable to keep their momentum going as they would fall to Lotle Lesschr Post and Catarina Zheng of Goldey-Beacom, 8-0.

Junior Kristel Kalm (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Siri Victorsson (Stockholm, Sweden) would also advance to the quarterfinals, but dropped a close 8-6 decision to Anna Hortelano Pey and Fredrika Regner of Goldey-Beacom. Junior Tadi Mrewa (East London, South Africa) and freshman Franziska Putschbach (Moenchweiler, Germany) would advance to the round of 16 before falling to Cassie Restrepo and Mia Briggs of Merrimack, 9-7.

Singles play for the women had Putschbach and Torres Martin earn a spot in the main draw after battling their way through the qualifiers. Victorsson would advance to the round of 16 where she fell to Ivana Andric of NYIT 6-3, 7-6, 9-11. Karlsson Hantzis would also play her war to the round of 16 as she was upended by second-seeded Karla Miletic of USciences 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
